Selecting the color theme is a tough part. Prefer colors like beige, gray or white, especially on the first floor, where flow is important as neutral walls gives the greatest decorating flexibility and also allows to easily switch up with accessories. Also, remember that color is influenced by how much light is brought into the house.
Try to make a combination of three shades that is one for walls, another one for larger accents such as couches or chairs, and then the third color that pops in smaller accessories such as pillows, flowers etc. Three is always better than one or two, as a room done in one color is boring.
2. Layer the Lighting
A room should have three kinds of lighting that are ambient, which comes from ceiling fixtures; task, which is found over a kitchen island and accent, which is more decorative and highlighting. Floor and table lamps can be placed at different heights around the room. Hanging lights is another option and can be placed over dining tables.
3. Lengthen or Raise the Ceiling
Hang curtains higher than the windows as it makes the room look taller. Also, try vertical striped patterned curtains as the lines visually elongate the walls. Leaning a large mirror against a wall also makes a room seem taller.
Rugs should be used instead of mats. It defines the seating area. All four legs of the sofa or the chair should fit on it, or at least the front two legs of the sofa or the chair should rest on it as every living room requires a rug to properly accommodate the seating area.
